Petite Jacket Sizing

Posted on: November 2, 2010

Miriam Webster defines petite as a noun meaning "a clothing size for short women". However, if you are one of the thousands of women, who stand below 5'5", you probably fall into the petite category. This is because the "standard" size clothing is designed for women who were at least 5'5" without shoes.

Sleeve length, torso lengths, can all create issues for those who are considered a petite size, especially when searching for jackets. All too often, petite sizes are not particularly design for women who are small framed. In fact, they may be boxy, or worse yet, may be designed with lines that make you look shorter.

While it is becoming more common to find attractive plus size garments, it still remains somewhat challenging to find petite garments. Fortunately, this is changing as more celebrities turn out to be less than the "fashionable" standard fashion model, who is about 5 foot 7 inches.

Challenges with petite jackets and coats

One of the challenges that face women who fall into the "petite" category is torso measurements. There are two separate measurements that include the horizontal, and the vertical. In addition, sleeve lengths can also be problematic.

The "standard" will often mean that waistlines, especially in jackets, do not fall properly on a petite frame. For those who are petite, searching for a petite jacket or petite coat is finally becoming much easier. More retailers are carrying a variety of styles and colors that are more appropriate for the petite figure.

Cost of petite jackets and coats

Technically, a petite jacket or coat should cost less than a "standard" size jacket or coat. This is often not the case, in fact, some retailers charge slightly more for petite garments of all types and petite jackets, and coats are no exception.

Why tags matter

Before you purchase a petite jacket or coat, make sure you carefully check the "petite" sizing charts. Charts should be reviewed for the particular manufacturer (or retailer). Some make petites for women who are 5'3" and under while others produce petite jackets and coats for those who are less than 5'4". This will make a difference in how your petite jacket or coat fits you. Remember, the difference is not just in the length. It is also in the way that the petite jacket or coat is designed in the arms and the torso area. A petite jacket that is designed for a woman who is 5'4" will have the waistline at least one half inch lower than one created for a woman who is 5'3".

Buyer always beware

Do not get fooled by retailers who use the word "petite" improperly. Whether you are 5'3" and weigh 100 pounds or 5'3" and weigh 200 pounds you can find the right petite jacket or coat that will fit your frame the best. Demand the best petite jackets and coats when you are searching for the right one for you.
